Some mornings you just can’t catch a break.
Despite your best effort, you still oversleep for work. You’re scrambling to get ready and finally leave your house 20 minutes behind schedule. And then, as you insert the key into the lock, you hear a dreadful snapping sound.
The key is broken, a part of it is stuck, and your morning just got a lot worse.
Why is this happening to you, and is there anything you can do to fix it?
Why Do Keys Break in Locks?
There are a couple of reasons why keys keep breaking in locks in the worst possible moment:
- The key owner tries to lock the door in a hurry.
Sounds familiar? Perhaps that’s exactly what happened to you - The key itself is worn down.
Over the years, your key might have suffered some damages clanging against other objects. - The lock is malfunctioning.
Even high-quality locks can break down after years of wear and tear.
Whatever the reason, a broken key with one part stuck in the lock should be addressed ASAP. Not only can a broken key damage the lock, but it can also put your home in risk. You may not be able to lock the door after the key snapped, or even worse, you may not be able to open your door later on.
What Can You Do to Fix It?
That depends on whether or not a part of the key can be seen sticking out of the lock.
If it does, then you might be able to fix it yourself.
If the part that is sticking out is big enough for you to pull it out, then be as gentle and patient as you can. Alternatively, you can use needle nose pliers. Whatever you do, restrain from using force. That may push the key deeper into the lock.
If not, then it’s a good time to call a professional.
